Tips From a Professional Pet Groomer

Hair Trimming Tips for Cats With Long Fur

Whether you’ve got a Persian cat, a Maine coon, or another long-haired feline, you probably know that grooming can be a challenge. Cats with long fur need regular cleanings. If you’re not comfortable trimming your cat’s fur, or if you have a lot of cats and don’t have time for all of them to get their hair cut, consider taking them to a professional pet groomer. Here are some hair trimming tips for cats with long fur:

Use the right hair trimming tools.

The right tools are essential for any pet grooming job. When choosing shears, look for ones that are made from stainless steel with a serrated blade. These will hold their edge longer than other materials and won’t dull as quickly when used on thick coats. Once you’ve purchased your new tools, it’s important that you learn how to care for them properly so they last as long as possible.

Shave in layers.

To get a smooth, even trim, it’s important to start with a clean slate. Use a comb or brush to part the fur down the middle of your cat’s back and then trim away any excess hair on either side of that line. Next, clip off some more length along each side of their spine until you reach the base of their neck. By using clippers only on one side of your pet’s body at a time, shave off all remaining fur from around their face and ears until they look like they have a buzz cut.

Keep your shaved cat clean and cool.

Shaving your cat will leave them feeling cool in the summer, but if you don’t wipe off any excess shaving cream, they can develop skin irritation and rashes. If this happens to your cat, give them a bath to get rid of any loose fur, and use a hair dryer to dry them off.
